CORBELLING – CONSTRUCTION GUIDE

Measure a circular pit using a tape measure. The width of the circle (diameter)
should be 1.4m wide.

Clearly mark the edge of the circle.

Dig the circular pit to 2.5m in depth
step 4
4 At 1.25m depth mark the side of the pit
step 5
Dig out a collar of earth 23cm wide into the pit
step 6
Prepare your mud mortar
step 7
Lay the first round of bricks so they are flush to the edge of the collar – this is
your foundation layer
step 8
The second level of bricks should have a 3cm overhang from the brick below it.

The third and fourth level of bricks should have a 3cm overhang
step 10
The 5th to 11th level should have a 6cm overhang from the brick below it.

NKHOKWE AND SAND-­BAG – CONSTRUCTION GUIDE

Dig a pit 1.5m in depth and 1.5m diameter
step 2
Collect local building materials to construct a nkhokwe
step 3
Build the mat for the nkhokwe
step 4
Trim to size to fit 1.5m depth and 1.5m width
step 5
Attach the inner frames. The diameter of the nkhokwe should be 1.5m.
step 6
Stand the nkhokwe up and attach the outer frames
step 7
Wrap the frame in black plastic.
step 8
Congratulate yourself at completing the nkhokwe.
step 9
Collect ten 50kg rice or maizebags. They can besecond-­‐hand but make sure they don’t have holes.

TRAPEZIUM BRICKS – CONSTRUCTION GUIDE
step 1
Dig a pit 2m in depth and 1m diameter
step 2
Create trapezium bricks through mitring square bricks with trowel
step 3
OR manufacture trapezium bricks using a wood frame
step 4
Mould bricks using frame and burn
step 5
Place bricks into pit and set next to each other to form a circle
