General Project Update

The Mzuzu University Centre of Excellence in Water and Sanitation oversees African water and sanitation research, which is networking regional water and sanitation work and also training of professionals through Mzuzu University. In 2009, the Mzuzu University Centre of Excellence in Water and Sanitation was established within the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. The primary objective of the Centre is to improve the effectiveness of sanitation, hygiene practices, and water supply interventions serving Malawi and the surrounding countries. The Centre participates in applied research, water quality analysis, training, consultancies, outreach programs, and the practical application of research findings.
Mzuzu University is implementing a share Grant Project Research In Private Sector Participation In The Delivery Of Sanitation And Hygiene Services (Research/Share/Malawi/2012/1) For The Government Of The Republic Of Malawi Ministry Of water Development And Irrigation.
On January 17th 2014, a Stakeholders Forum was held at NkhataBay. The purpose of the stakeholders forum was to:

  1. Present a project overview to stakeholders
  2. Discuss private sector institutions and their roles
  3. Discuss potential opportunities, barriers and threats within the sector in taking up sanitation facilities
  4. Discuss of intiatives the government is taking to encourage the medium-high scale entrepreneurs to take up sanitation as a business as stipulated in the policy.
  5. Discuss reasons why lending institutions are not willing to provide financial services.

The forum, moderated by Mzuzu University Centre of excellence in water and sanitation, brought together government officials and local community service organizations to gather feedback on promoting sanitation as a business throughout the district.
